Filtrexx uses
composted feedstocks for our material selection because it offers an availalbe,
high quality, low risk option for filtration and growing applications.
There are over 4,000 compost sites in the US that take in leaf and yard debris
for compost feedstock. This is primarily our feedstock material before composting
and our products meeting specification are derived from these materials. Due
to the large number of compost locations, freight to the job sites is normally
not as large a factor as with other products.
For Filter
Media, the product used to filter stormwater or other pollutants, we need
a balance of predictable flow through rate in order to meet design criteria
as well as effective filtration rate that removes our target pollutants such
as sediment, nutrients, motor oil, hydrocarbons, etc. Filter Media may be
certified and such certification testing may be available from your local
installer.
For Growing Media, the compost used is tested for growth characteristics and
normally a lab sample is tested for fertiliy.
In both cases, good things happen when you compost. Weed seeds, diseases and insects are killed during effective composting processes and this means we do not have these in our products when specs are followed accordingly. Composting also increases surface area of adsorptive and absorbtive sites for better filtration. |

Compost provides a good substrate to provide physical, chemical and biological filtration. Although other products like mulch and wood chips may provide physical portions of this, they do not match the chemical and biological benefits of using compost. Finally, compost has been researched by many state colleges, labs and agencies whereas other feedstocks have limited support documentation on the limits of their use. |
Filtrexx offers a private certification program for compost products used in our installations. For more information, contact your local installer or the select the certification tab on this website.
